The Gordie Howe International Bridge is a cable-stayed international bridge currently in construction across the Detroit river. This bridge will connect Detroit and Windsor by linking Interstate 75 (I-75) and Interstate 96 (I-96) in Michigan with Highway 401 in Ontario. Development of this massive undertaking will have environmental implications on residents living near the construction site, due to the large amount construction traffic traversing these localities. As a result, the City of Detroit’s Bridging Neighborhoods Program (BNP) was created to offer owners of residential parcels within the vicinity of I-75 the chance to receive upgrades to their homes to (1) reduce interior noise levels caused by freeway traffic and (2) reduce indoor air pollutants from diesel emissions.
DMC was initially contracted to provide these services for a group of 40 homes, coordinating activities with City of Detroit personnel to minimize disturbance to homeowners and protect existing structures. The primary installations included HVAC upgrades, window upgrades, and insulation upgrades. After successful completion of Phase 1 of 40 homes, DMC was awarded the opportunity to renovate another 80-160 homes in Phase 2.
