The City of Hamtramck houses the Historical Hamtramck Stadium, built in 1930 for the Detroit Stars of the Negro National League. After getting added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2012, today it remains as one of the five Negro League-era ballparks left in existence. After decades of unuse, this iconic monument needed a full-scale restoration to revitalize and reenergize the surrounding community. In 2021, DMC was awarded a contract by Wayne County to renovate and restore the historical Hamtramck Stadium, as designed by Detroit-Based Architectural firm SmithGroup. The renovation work included installation of a new metal roof above the grandstand, restoring the seating and the brick exterior, structural column repairs, new handrails, guardrails, and installing accessible ADA walls. During the process, there were numerous challenges faced by the DMC project team due to existing site conditions, COVID-related material delays, and price escalations. Despite these challenges, DMC team was able to successfully complete the project within budget. After its restoration, the stadium and surrounding ballpark held a rededication ceremony and became open to the public and as a local/community attraction. |
